Claudia Russell

Claudia Russell (born 1953) grew up on a California ranch. Her parents sent her to school hoping she would see opportunity in something other than ranching. It didn’t take. As she puts it, “If you grow up with cowboys, how could you not marry one?” She fends off bears, coyotes, and rustlers, fights wildfires when they threaten, rescues broncs and Brahmas that have taken a plunge in her swimming pool, and cooks up heaping meals for ranch crews. She revels in the rewards and challenges that the life of a working cowgirl presents. Interviewed New Cuyama, California, 1997
